Hospital Previews New Equipment

November 14, 2008

Athol Memorial Hospital celebrated OR week with an interactive educational activity for hospital staff and new endoscopy equipment. The Surgical Services Department, headed by Bella Finnell, RN, Surgery Manager, set up a simulated “hands on” case-in-progress for staff to experience. Participants took turns at laparoscopic surgery by manipulating equipment to remove a candy mint from a pretend patient’s stomach. The hospital’s new state-of-the-art endoscopy equipment was also on display.

The new equipment includes an Evis Exera II Gastrointestinal Videoscope, an Evis Exera II Colonovideoscope, an Evis Exera II Video System Center, an Evis Exera II Xenon Light Source, and a high definition LCD monitor/LCD monitor, all manufactured by Olympus. Advantages of this new equipment include optimum visual quality combined with close focus observation and narrow band imaging capability.

The equipment provides exceptionally clear, true-to-life images and precise detail which means improved detection, identification and the most accurate diagnoses available. The gastrointestinal videoscope is used for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures, and the extra-slim colonovideoscope is used for examining the lower gastrointestinal tract. “We are pleased to offer such superior diagnostic tools,” stated Finnell. “The image quality is remarkable, the equipment is wonderful to work with, and it allows our physicians to provide very best service to our patients.”
